John managed to stop up way past his bedtime last night to give me the lowdown as to what is happening at Butler Sheet Metal at the moment.
His typing skills are such that it took him infinitely longer than it would any ordinary mortal, but it appears that we’re rather busy quoting for jobs that have come via the internet. I know I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but it’s definitely going from strength to strength.
And you know something else? It seems that we’re getting one or two of the jobs aswell.
Yes, I know this is what should be happening, but I’d just like to point out that before I started with the Butler Sheetmetal site I had no idea about website building, or SEO, or anything relating to web presences at all. And everybody at BSM HQ had even less of an idea than me.
To say I didn’t have a clue about blogs would also be a slight overstatement.
Now I’m still no expert, but something we’ve done has worked somewhere along the line. Either that, or we’re extremely lucky bastards. I’ve also worked harder than I ever have in my entire life for less reward than I ever have done in my entire life – other than the sheer enjoyment, of course.
It is possible to take obscure, non-tech related businesses that wouldn’t know the backend of a blog from the backend of a bus and create a viable and profitable web presence for that business.
But, it’s not a time to rest on one’s laurels as there’s plenty I still get wrong and plenty I still don’t know and could probably be doing a damn sight better. For example, the main Butler Sheetmetal site hardly even integrates the the blog in any way, shape or form, and that needs addressing.
We also don’t sell nearly as many of our planters as we should, but we would seriously struggle and have to make some serious decisions about expanding if we did.
As experiments go, it’s been rather interesting.
Nobody expected any of this to actually work apart from me, and I didn’t know what I was talking about.
Anyway, give it a couple of months and there might just be a little case study to celebrate one year of the Tinbasher.
I just hope that still wants to do it.

Tinbasher nearly one year on
An excellent summary of nearly one year of a tin basher (sheet metal fabricator) blogging. One of the very few (if not only) ‘industrial’ bloggers. Wonder if he fancies popping up to Cambridge for Our Social World to enlighten some of our…
